Malfunctioning school bus hit parent in wild Boston chain-reaction crash, source says
Video from the scene near Hyde Park's Henry Grew School showed a school bus that appears to have collided with another vehicle and a black SUV partially on top of the roof of a car
By Darren Botelho, Marc Fortier and Munashe Kwangwari • • A bus was captured on video slamming into a line of cars in Boston, pushing them together.
A school bus that was involved in a large pile-up car crash hit a parent outside a Boston elementary school Thursday morning, a source close to Boston Public Schools told NBC10 Boston.
The bus had an acceleration malfunction, according to the source. The driver turned off the engine but the bus still hit other vehicles.
The parent, as well as a child who was also involved — it wasn't immediately clear how — were expected to be OK, according to the source. A witness told NBC10 Boston that the parent who was hit was conscious and talking. A pile-up car crash involving a school bus and multiple other vehicles left a woman injured in Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood on Thursday morning, officials said.
Surveillance footage captured the moment the bus plowed into the other vehicles, pushing an SUV onto the roof of a car behind it.
Video from the scene outside the Henry Grew School showed the school bus at the back of the pile-up and the black SUV partially on top of the roof of the car. Video from a street in Hyde Park shows a chain-reaction crash that left an SUV on the roofs of two cars while leaning on a sidewalk.
The woman who was hurt hasn't been identified and authorities haven't said how badly she was hurt, but a relative, Michelle Legette, told NBC10 Boston she will be OK. She said her daughter-in-law was taken to the hospital.
It didn't appear any students were on the bus at the time of the crash — school officials told NBC10 Boston the students on board had just been dropped off.
A Boston Public Schools crisis team was sent to help any students or staffers who saw the crash, according a letter the principal sent to families.
"We understand that this incident may be concerning to you, and we want to assure you that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our students," Principal Christina Michel said.
Boston police said the call came in around 8:17 a.m. for a motor vehicle crash on Gordon Avenue. A pedestrian and multiple vehicles had been struck.
The cause of the crash, and how the SUV ended up perched on top of the other vehicle, remained unclear.
